Joomla 1.5 end of life

Description

Joomla 1.5 is an outdated version of the Joomla content management system that reached end-of-life on April 30, 2012. This means the software no longer receives security patches, bug fixes, or official support from the Joomla project. Running unsupported software exposes the application to known and newly discovered vulnerabilities that will never be remediated.

Remediation

Immediately plan and execute a migration from Joomla 1.5 to the latest stable version of Joomla (currently Joomla 4.x or 5.x). Follow these steps:

1. Create a complete backup of your current Joomla 1.5 installation, including all files and the database
2. Review the official Joomla migration documentation at https://docs.joomla.org/Planning_Migration_-_Joomla_1.5_to_3
3. Test the migration process in a staging environment before applying to production
4. Verify that all extensions and templates are compatible with the target Joomla version, or identify suitable replacements
5. Perform the migration during a scheduled maintenance window
6. After migration, verify all functionality and apply the latest security updates

If immediate migration is not feasible, consider temporarily placing the site behind a web application firewall (WAF) and restricting administrative access by IP address until the upgrade can be completed. However, this should only be a short-term measure as the underlying vulnerabilities remain unpatched.
